[Solved] cannot share files in from my Vista machine

cannot share files in from my Vista machine

I have a home network with 4 PC's on it.
My main PC is a Vista desktop, it is hardwired to my router. The other PC's are connected wireless.
I have a laptop with windows 7..and 2 other desktops with xp installed.  My problem is this....I have no trouble
sharing files and folders out of my public folder on my Vista machine with the rest of the network, but for some reason, I cannot share files or folders on my home network out of any other location on the Vista PC.  I have a extra 500 gig hard drive installed
in my Vista PC that I would like to use as a central back up drive for my entire network....but for some reason I cannot share any files or folders out of this drive.
I have no problem sharing this drive with other users on this pc...but I cannot get it shared
on the network.
I have tried all the standard sharing techniques, but no luck.
I just get a message saying that the network resource is not available.
It shows up on my network under the PC , but it is not accessible.
I was originally trying to share the whole
drive..but was advised to just make a folder in the drive to share rather than trying to share the root drive.....but still no luck.
  What am I missing???

Note: this is a problem with all my networked machines...not one of them can access this drive.
